Susie Watterson
Susie Watterson is an Eagle sponsor and charter member of the Birmingham Chapter of the EWGA since the Chapter was established in 1994. Susie recalls “a group of professional women sought my legal services to create an Alabama non-profit corporation with the purpose of encouraging working women to play golf together in leagues around the Birmingham area. At that time the only game in town was the Women’s Alabama Golf Association and their tournaments and ‘play days’ were always scheduled during working hours. Furthermore, unless you were a member of a private club, you couldn’t even play in WAGA tournaments – a situation only recently rectified with their including EWGA members in their state tournaments. I was one of the charter members of this local organization that later merged with EWGA.”
Susie has been playing golf since Santa Claus brought her a set of clubs when she was eight years old, and credits her love of the game to her dad. She shares this about her father; “golf is a game we shared all of my life and for that I am eternally grateful. The night he died, he had gone to sleep knowing he had an 8 o’clock tee time with his buddies, intending to test a brand new set of Calloways he had received for his 69th birthday that week. We all thought his tee time was at his club in Montgomery, but obviously that tee time was moved to a much more heavenly venue.”
Susie joined EWGA to have an opportunity to play golf with other working women whose schedules and golfing goals were similar to hers. She enjoys a friendly wager and has met working women golfers from all walks of life around the country. She says “golfers are very interesting people and working women golfers have come to be my most favorite people. Inevitably, if you share of a love for golf, you find many more characteristics you share in common.” Susie’s favorite EWGA event is one that joins match play with team competition and frequently participates in the Dixie Cup and Atlanta Challenge.
Susie is an attorney at law and has been in private practice since 1981. Her expertise is in estate and family business succession planning. Susie prepares wills and trusts, as well as documents creating business entities associated with estate planning and asset protection. She also personally prepares tax returns for her estate planning clients. Why is Susie an EWGA sponsor? “That’s a tax deductible no brainer!! What could be more win-win than encouraging friends - old and new – to play the game that I love?”
